Caves of Cabarete and Goleta Natural Monument

The Caves of Cabarete and Goleta Natural Monument (The Caves of Cabarete), is a category 3 protected area located in Cabarete in the north of the Dominican Republic. It was decreed by law 64-00 and sectoral law 202-04, it is one of the best cities in the province of Puerto Plata.

In this place, the diverse and important ecosystems that exist in this natural monument are protected, whose total surface is 77.5 km² in a humid broadleaf forest, with abundant species of endemic and migratory birds. Similarly, there is a large number of endemic trees, shrubs and medicinal plants, of which we can mention: Roystonea regia (Palm), Swietenia mahagoni, Bursera simaruba, Annona muricata, among others.

The Cabarete caves began activities around 1986 by a man nicknamed Jingle Jhon Drittrich who settled in these areas to explore diving and ecology, where he remained for several years until his death.

The Association of The Caves of Cabarete Guides, legally arise in 2010 with the idea of ​​4 local guides to empower the communities of Cabarete in tourist activities and take advantage of these natural reserves that exist in this Municipal District of Cabarete which represents the lung of this District. . Which has made an enhancement to the visits and putting all of Cabarete on high for the way of interpreting nature, it should be noted that this is a place rich in history, culture and ecology.

One of the most important and protected ecosystems in the world is the Mangrove ecosystem, among which the Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle) and the Button Mangrove (Conocarpus erectus) stand out, its rock formation of cartic stones in the form of hummocks , serving as a filter for the water that falls in the form of rain, forming underground aquifers and this represents one of the most important water reserves on the island.

The Caves of Cabarete Guides Association carries out excursions within the protected area of ​​the Caves of Cabarete and Goleta Natural Monument, with the aim of letting visitors know the extraordinary beauty that Cabarete has in its nature reserve through nature interpreter guides.
